STS-56: More Scifi Sketches

I promise this will have a name beyond "scifi comic" eventually, but for now, that's all it is. Most of what you see are my (Graham) sketches and designs, since I'm doing the pencils on this project, but every so often Caroline does a sketch of her own, and that's what we're showing today. A couple of sketches Caroline did of one of the main characters of the comic, one in pencil and the other just in pen.



No updates yet on when, exactly, you'll get to see the comic pages, but I promise you they're coming! Until then, as always, our webcomic Of Stars and Swords continues to update weekly and is nearing the end of Issue 4 of the story! And you can catch up there on the website or on Comixology!

STS-51: Megacon 2013

This was our first year getting a table at Megacon, after years of just bringing our portfolio and bugging pros.  Graham even had his own portfolio this year, full of pages from his sci-fi comic!

STS-46: OSAS Issue 2 Cover Inks

Happy Christmas Eve, everyone!

We're currently in between Issue 2 and 3 for our webcomic, Of Stars and Swords, and while we're taking a two week break before the start of Issue 3, that doesn't mean we don't have something coming for you. Caroline has been putting together a cover image for Issue 2, because for some reason we enjoy doing those after the issue ends instead of before!

We'll have the full color version up on Wednesday on the main OSAS website, but until then, how about a look at the inks?

STS-43: Scifi Comic Preview - Character Lineup

Hey, everyone!

Over the past few months, I've been working on putting together a scifi comic to run alongside Of Stars and Swords. Plans are being made, scripts are getting finished, and art is even starting to come together! A couple of months back we showed off some headshots for the characters, but initial designs can only go so far.

Alongside starting on the initial pages, I recently put together a full lineup of the main characters. Caroline helped me tweak them to get things just right, and afterwards she inked the piece. So here's a look at the main cast. Should have a color version to come relatively soon, handled by Caroline of course. As usual, click to see a slightly bigger version!

STS-30: Flyer - Inks and Process

Okay, so here's a little bit more than just art. This is the same flyer we showed the pencils on a few days back, but this time, it's inked! Here's the usual straight-blacks that one normally gets with these kinds of things. Now, there aren't a lot of heavy blacks here. They're mostly being used to pull Seren out from the background elements. But the other reason is this isn't the last step for inking when it comes to Of Stars and Swords.

After the blacks are in, all the pages get a nice wash of grey. Caroline uses this to help define subtler tones and shading. It also adds something to the overall feel of the finished pages, giving them an older, rougher look that helps the mood of a fantasy comic. Plus, as great as the black always look when she's done with that step, the greys just pull everything together. Here, especially, you can start to see what's going to happen with the background and where the logo/text is going to go.

STS-26: Aram, Inks

Look! We have art again!

So here is yet another character design for Of Stars and Swords. This is one of the main cast, Aram, and a character that we realized needed a heavy redesign from our initial take. So Caroline and I planned out his new outfit together and then she made this. In all honesty, this design is one of my favorites and I'm glad we took the time to do it.

STS-23: Baldur, Inks

So for today's piece of art, it's one of our major characters for Of Stars and Swords, Baldur. Normally he's wearing heavy armor, but as that isn't practical to wear 24/7, we needed to design some more casual clothes. As he's a priest, robes made sense. Caroline put this one together herself, and we'll have the color version to show a little later in the week, along with the design sketches that got us to this point.
